Ethical Investments
Do you know you can influence companies around the world
to care about the environment? Are you concerned that your
ISA investment may benefit organisations whose activities
you disprove of such as gambling, arms manufacture, alcohol
or tobacco?
If you are then ethical investment is for you.
Ethical Investment (or Socially Responsible Investment -
SRI) is the inclusion of social, ethical and environmental
factors into the process of selecting your investments. It
enables you to make a financial return but not at any price
- why should you have to invest in companies whose activities
you disprove of?
Investment strategies
As an ethical investor there are two main strategies you
can follow:
- Negative - avoiding companies involved
in activities you do not approve of, such as armaments manufacture
and alcohol
- Positive - supporting companies which
make positive contributions to society, e.g. by being environmentally
friendly or active in community involvement
Some funds actually combine both these approaches, while
others go further by using shareholder pressure to bring about
changes in company policy. By joining forces with other investors
some ethical funds have successfully influenced companies
to change their practices.
Ethical investment funds use a screening process to ensure
that the companies they invest in are the right ones to meet
their ethical policy. This screening will remove companies
considered to be ‘negative’ and will encourage
investment in ‘positive’ companies
